Watch out for this could save your dog’s life. Remember, even in normal situations, dogs are highly excitable animals and mirror human emotions. If you get excited, your dog will get excited too.
Imagine a scenario where you are searching for your lost dog and cannot find it in your neighbourhood. In a panic, you take out your car and head towards the nearest highway. You are in luck as you see your beloved pooch standing in the middle of the highway with cars and trucks zipping past by him. In a fit of elation, you call out to your dog. It sees you and makes a jump towards you. In an instant, a passing vehicle crushes it to death!
It can be an ordeal trying to locate your lost pet. If you spot your dog on a road with high traffic such as a highway, DO NOT do these 1) call him out from a distance 2) make yourself visible to him. In doing this, you will excite your dog, who will then leap or run towards you and can get run over by a passing vehicle. Be mindful that on a busy road, your runaway dog is likely to be confused and tensed. Therefore, when it sees you, it will get excited, and at that moment can take a leap of death. Besides, in trying to avoid hitting the dog, the driver may swerve, leading to a serious accident involving over one vehicle. If there is a search party for the dog, instruct everyone not to excite the dog if they locate it in areas with vehicular traffic. If you spot your dog on a highway, approach it quietly without alerting it. Only when you reach within a safe distance, allow it to see you. Make sure you leash him immediately. You need presence of mind in rescuing a dog on a busy road.
The above holds true not just for high-traffic roads and highways but for any place that can be dangerous such as one with electric cables/wires, machinery, tools and equipment lying about. Even in homes, it’s dangerous to excite your dog as it may trip over an elderly family member, a child, or another pet. You need to be mindful of your surroundings because your dog is unlikely to be. Only working dogs such as the army or police dogs, service dogs are trained to be calm and alert in dangerous situations.
