How to survive a dog attack is something every individual should know, irrespective of whether he/she is a dog lover. A dog can attack because of the following reasons: territorial aggression, feeling threatened by the human, protecting its human family, protecting its puppies and so on. Please be aware that dogs can kill humans and both pet dogs and feral dogs attack humans. It is not too difficult for an adult Rottweiler weighing 70 Kg. to kill an adult human male in just a few minutes (I am not implying that Rottweilers are innately aggressive dogs—if you can raise a Rottweiler correctly, it can be a wonderful dog).
Here is what you need to keep in mind for ‘how to survive a dog attack”:
1) Keep three parts of your body ALWAYS protected: face, neck and fingers. In order to protect your fingers, you need to make fists in both your hands, not for punching the dog but to hide your fingers from the dog’s teeth. Even if the dog gets your fist inside its mouth, you can pull out your fist faster than your fingers. Serious injuries on the fingers can lead to amputation, so please save your fingers. A dog’s sharp bite on the neck can lead to quick blood loss and death.
2) Being confronted by an angry dog is the first stage. DO NOT run or the dog will chase you; it is highly unlikely that you will outrun the animal. If you were jogging or running when the dog confronted you, then stop moving. Stand quietly, become firm and motionless. If possible, stand sideways to the dog so as to avoid facing it upfront.
3) Stay calm because if you get excited and start jumping and yelling, the dog is likely to get excited too and become more aggressive. Your calmness will signal to the dog that you are not a threat. Do not make eye contact with the dog. It is only with friendly dogs that making eye contact helps in closer bonding but never with a dog that is attacking you.
4) Dogs easily understand the human ‘NO’, so firmly use this word and tell the animal to back off. A cold steely retort from you can scare the dog.
5) If you are carrying any stuff such as a bag or purse, throw it away to distract the dog. Never throw it at the dog or else you will infuriate it even more. If the bag has food, then it is even better because food always attracts dogs. If the dog gets distracted, here’s your chance to escape. However, make sure you walk away slowly from the dog and do not run. If there is not much space to throw your stuff, then place it between yourself and the dog to establish a boundary.
6) If the dog has your hand or any other body part inside its mouth, resist the urge to pull it back or else you will get ‘tear’ wounds on your flesh. Besides, this will aggravate the dog even more. It might be a good idea to drive your hand further into the dog’s mouth to make it choke.
7) Try as quickly as possible to find higher ground such as the top of a car or tree. Dogs are not good climbers.
8) If your negotiation skills do not work and the dog finally attacks you, then kick it on its head or on the sides as hard as you can. You can use any object as a weapon, such as a knife or a pen. In case you fall on the ground, curl up and hide your face and cover the back of your neck with your hands.
9) If a pack of angry dogs surround and attack you, tackle the most dominant one among them first as this is the alpha-male and the pack leader. If you manage to subdue this one, the others are likely to off. Do not hesitate in such situations to throw a stone or anything you can get to defend yourself.
10) If you find the dog distracted (with something you have thrown) or losing interest in you even after having physically attacked you, make sure you walk away slowly from the dog. Do not run or you might agitate it and it will chase you.
In conclusion, it is best to remain alert and not lose your nerves when confronted by an aggressive dog. Keep an eye open in case your neighbour has an aggressive dog or if a particular stray dog in your neighbourhood is aggressive. If bitten by a dog, please wash the wounds as quickly as possible and seek immediate medical attention. A stray dog could be rabid or a pet dog might not have been vaccinated with an anti-rabies injection. It is prudent not to trust a pet dog’s owner even if they say their dog is anti-rabies vaccinated. If bitten, seek medical help. Period. Rabies has no cure and very few people survive if they get infected. In most cases, rabies results in death. Do not forget to teach your children the above tips on how to survive a dog attack.
